LG KC780 8 megapixel Camera Phone

The LG KC780 8 megapixel cameraphone is now officially confirmed, as we managed to snatch a press photo of the upcoming slider. We don't have the specs of the KC780, but we know that it's being touted by LG as the slimmest 8 megapixel phone to-date. That means it has to be slimmer than 13.8mm to qualify and beat the Samsung M8800 Pixon.

Update 30 Sep: We just received the first live shots of the LG KC870, check them out at the bottom.

The LG KC780 made its first appearance last week in a blurry, under-the-shelf photo, but this time we have a nice pic for you to enjoy. We still don't know more details about the handset than we already had last time, but you know, a picture is worth a thousand words.

And by the way, we also received a hint that LG will be announcing a new slim full touch handset tomorrow that promises to break the barrier of affordability. But more on that when the time comes.

LG KC780 is the next 8 megapixel slider

The 8 megapixel slider LG KC780 should be able to offer quad-band GSM support and even limited touchscreen functionality - only in multimedia applications much like the LG KF750 Secret. We can also expect 30fps video recording - but that of course is a no-brainer for LG cameraphones.

Update 30 Sep: We just received the first live shots of the LG KC870 - believe it or not - right next to LG Renoir. Just by looking at them, it's hard to tell which one is slimmer, but the guy who sent this in, says the KC780 is no slimmer than Renoir.

Samsung Pixon M8800 8 Megapixel Camera Phone

Samsung Pixon M8800 is being marketed as "the world's slimmest full-touch 8.0-megapixel camera phone", at 13.8-mm thin.

Measuring 3.2-inch, the touchscreen is a 240 x 400 resolution-boasting WQVGA TFT LCD number. The camera has a 16x digital zoom, auto-focus, face detection and geo-tagging, and there's even a dedicated photo browser to view and share your pics.

Capture video footage at 30fps (720 x 480 resolution) or 120fps (QVGA), and even film in slow-mo. Play video in files including MPEG4, WMV, DivX and Xvid.

Internal memory is paltry, at just 200MB supplied, however there's the microSD card slot, so buy yourself one of those 16GB SanDisk cards we reviewed yesterday, and load it with thousands of tunes. As long as they're in MP3, AAC, e-AAC+, e-AAC+ or WMA format.

Out in the UK from the 1st of November, the Samsung Pixon MM8800 should be available on most major mobile carriers

LG Prada II Handset

If not for the Apple’s iPhone, LG Prada KE850 handset could have been in the running for a mobile phone of the year.

After all it had a great looks, great luxury brand behind it and was actually the first handset to utilize full touch screen interface. Alas, the iPhone was announced first, had much better implemented touch interface and stole all the limelight from the Prada phone.

And, to tell the truth, what was LG thinking, putting such a lame features like only 2.5G connectivity and 2 megapixel camera on it’s flagship?

But now it’s time for a rematch and LG seems to have an impressive Prada successor to counter the upcoming 3G iPhone. It has again teamed up with Prada to produce the new LG Prada II handset.

Source: http://www.unwiredview.com/2008/04/25/lg-prada-ii-in-the-works/

It’s hard to tell what LG Prada 2 will look like, since no pictures are available yet (the picture above is my own mock-up).

But we already know that LG Prada II will be a slider with full a full QWERTY keyboard. And that Prada 2 spec sheet, obtained by Eprice, is more then impressive.

LG Prada II specs will include:

  • Quad-band GSM (850/900/1800/1900). WCDMA 900/2100, 7.2 Mbps HSDPA connectivity
  • 3″ WQVGA 400×240 px TFT touchscreen
  • 5 megapixel camera
  • front camera for video calls
  • Wi-Fi b/g connectivity
  • USB 2.0, Bluetooth
  • Full HTML browsing
  • FM-Radio
  • TV-out
  • microSDHC memory card slot (up to 8GB)
  • slide-out QWERTY keyboard

According to the leaked press release, LG Prada II will be even more focused on the overall design/user experience. The Prada designers will be closely involved in making the custom themes, touch UI, built-in ringtones and cellphone accessories for Prada 2 phone.

LG Prada II is expected to launch in Q4 2008.

Moto Yuva A810 for Indian Market

US based mobile phone maker Motorola has announced that they would be launching a cheap full touch-screen device in the Indian market next month.

The first of the new models would be the Moto Yuva A810. It would be priced at around Rs. 8000.

The phone would feature a 2.2-inch touch-screen, handwriting recognition. Motorola would customize the phone with Indian features like SMS in local languages.

The new device -- Moto Yuva A810 -- will be available here from next month, said Lloyd Mathias, Motorola India’s senior director, head ofsales, India and southwest Asia.
The internet-ready phone comes with a 2.2-inch touch-screen, handwriting recognition and a host of other multimedia features. Motorola has also customized the phone for the Indian market with features like SMS in ‘Hinglish’ (English+Hindi), a large phone book that stores 500 entries and ability to store 750 SMSes.
“There is a huge expectation in the Indian market for low-cost touch-screen phones. With the new product we expect a good demand for the it,” Mathiassaid. After the launch of the iPhone in the Indian market in August this year, mobile device manufacturers have readied themselves to launch touchscreen devices to cash in on the hype created by iPhone.
Samsung also launched a full touch-screen ‘Omnia´ priced over Rs39,000. Industry leaders say that since most touch-devices have been positioned as premium products priced above Rs30,000, the new entry-level PDA would see an emergence of low-priced touch phones in the country.
In India, the market for entry-level sub-Rs3,000 constitutes more than50% of the total mobile handset market in the country, Mathias said adding that Motorola is expanding the offerings in the segment with the launch of three handsets under the Yuva series to tap the low-end handset market.

Lloyd Mathias, Motorola India’s senior director, head of sales (India and southwest Asia) spoke about this new model: “There is a huge expectation in the Indian market for low-cost touch-screen phones. With the new product we expect a good demand for it.”

India has been seeing a lot of new high end mobile phones like the Apple iPhone 3G, Blackberry Bold and Samsung Omnia. Good to see a cheap touch screen mobile phone being planned for the market.

T-Mobile G1 vs Apple Iphone

Iphonevshtc2

The HTC T-Mobile G1 clearly has Apple's iPhone in mind as its top competitor, so we've compiled a side-by-side comparison of their specifications. Behold (below the jump):

Iphonevshtcfinal

Here are some major differences you'll notice: iPhone 3G has a multi-touch screen while the G1 just has a touch screen (meaning it can't track multiple simultaneous gestures) although it does have a trackball and QWERTY keyboard; the G1 doesn't have true video playback capabilities (although it does have video-streaming capabilities via YouTube) while the iPhone 3G does; Apple's reported battery life for iPhone 3G on standby time is significantly longer than the G1's; iPhone 3G has support for Microsoft Exchange, while G1 doesn't.

So specifications-wise, the iPhone 3G appears to have the G1 beat. We'll just have to see which one outperforms the other when we get our hands on the G1 soon. Google Android better be one hell of an operating system if HTC wishes to compete with the hugely successful iPhone accompanied by its prolific App Store.

ASUS Laptop G50V-A1 Review

The G50V is ASUS' latest notebook addition to their Republic of Gamers series brand. It is a high-performance 15.4-inch notebook based on the Intel Centrino 2 platform. Highlights of this portable powerhouse include a top-shelf Nvidia GeForce 9700M-GT 512MB, dual hard drives, and a striking, flashy design that says "gamer."

Before we start the review, I would like to give a special thanks to Justin Nolte of XOTIC PC for sending us this evaluation unit.

System Specifications and Pricing

ASUS offers the G50V in several different configurations. The A1 version we are reviewing has the following specifications:

  • Intel Core 2 Duo T9400 (2.53GHz/6MB L2/1066MHz FSB/ 35W TDP)
  • Windows Vista Home Premium 64-bit w/ SP1
  • Intel PM45 + ICH9 chipset
  • 4GB DDR2-800 RAM
  • 15.4-inch WSXGA+ (1680x1050) glossy display
  • Nvidia GeForce 9700M-GT w/ 512MB GDDR3
  • 2x 250GB 5400RPM SATA hard drives
  • 8X DVDRW Super Multi drive
  • 8-in-1 card reader
  • Built-in 1.3-megapixel camera
  • Intel Wireless WiFi Link 5100AGN + built-in Bluetooth wireless

As of the publishing date, the ASUS G50V-A1 is listed for $1,639 on XOTICPC.com.

Design

The G50V is aimed squarely at the gaming crowd. Its design says "gamer" no matter what way you look at it. There is nothing understated about the design of this notebook. Let's start with the back of the lid.

The most eye-catching part about the back of the lid is the four blue lights. They are not overly bright, but are easily seen. Two light bars are located at either end of the lid on the very edge, which blink in patterns. At the top of the lid is a clear shield with the Republic of Gamers logo inside. Finally, towards the bottom there is a horizontal light bar that spans about half of the lid. The majority of the lid is glossy metallic black plastic. At the very bottom of the lid below the horizontal light bar is a rubberized and textured section that acts as a grip for carrying the notebook.

The inside of the notebook has a design that is just as flashy as the lid. The trim surrounding the keyboard and bordering the right and left edges of the chassis are glossy orange plastic. The palmrest area is made of the same rubberized textured material found on the back of the lid. The touchpad is bordered by brushed aluminum trim. Above the keyboard is a strip of glossy black plastic where all the touch controls are located, and on either side of that are the two Altec Lansing speakers. Above the screen is a webcam embedded in a mirrored surface. Even the bottom of the notebook has an interesting design - the single large intake vent for the fan has a shiny silver border and an orange vent.

You can see from the pictures that the G50V is larger than a typical 15.4-inch notebook, evidenced by the relatively large screen benzel. The main benefit of the larger chassis is the inclusion of a separate number pad, but the downside is slightly reduced portability. The G50V-A1 weighs in at 6.5 lbs and is 14.2 in (36 cm) wide, 10.2 in (25.9 cm) deep, and 1.1 - 1.6 in (2.8 - 4.1 cm) thick. The notebook feels somewhat heavy, but is not hard to transport in a backpack. As I noted, the G50V is larger than a typical 15.4-inch notebook.

Overall, this notebook's design is striking and well-finished. It is for those that want to be noticed.

Build Quality

The G50V is made of strong plastic and has a solid feel. The chassis resists twisting, and all surfaces are difficult to find flex in. The hinges securely anchor the display to the base of the notebook, and the lid itself is rigid and is hard to twist. Pressing on the back of the lid yields no ripples in the screen. There is basically no display wobble. I am more than impressed with the build quality of this notebook.

Wireless

The G50V-A1 features the latest-generation Intel Wireless WiFi Link 5100AGN, supporting 802.11a/b/g/n wireless signals. I had no trouble connecting to a variety of secured networks.

Battery

The G50V-A1 lasted about two hours in my battery test in power saving mode while surfing the Internet. Though two hours is not a lot, it is reasonable for a gaming notebook with a 6-cell battery.

The G50V-A1's 6-cell battery is rated for 4800mAh, with 11.1V.

Extras

The G50V comes with several accessories, including a backpack and a gaming mouse. The backpack is of reasonable quality and has good padding. There are two compartments; a sleeve inside the main compartment holds the notebook securely in place during travel. There is enough room in the backpack for the notebook, power adapter, mouse, and perhaps a textbook.

The mouse is a well-respected Logitech MX518 gaming mouse. It has rubber grips and a carbon-fiber imprint design. It is corded and has a high resolution optical sensor.

Conclusion

Gamers in the market for a well-priced 15.4-inch gaming notebook should seriously consider the ASUS G50V-A1. Its flashy design, solid build quality, high performance components, and beautiful screen make it the ideal mobile gaming companion. Excellent warranty coverage and good-quality included accessories seal the deal. If you liked what you read in this review, it is difficult to go wrong with this machine.

Pros

  • Flashy, attractive design
  • Gorgeous WSXGA+ display
  • Strong overall performance, especially for gaming
  • Solid build quality
  • Very good keyboard
  • Vast input/output port array
  • Runs cool and is relatively quiet
  • Nice extras - backpack and gaming mouse

Cons

  • Larger than a normal 15.4-inch notebook
  • Missing dedicated Home, End, Page Up, and Page Down keys
  • Disappointing speakers

Ultraportable Sony VAIO TT Laptop

vaio-tt.jpg

Sony’s VAIO TT is a recently released line of 11-inch laptops, as successors to the TZ line. Not netbooks mind you, as this new model, starting at $2,000, really does feature full functionality in a portable package. According to Crave:

Sony says the new system has a lightweight carbon-fiber chassis that weighs about 2.87 pounds and measures less than one inch thick. Unlike netbooks, the Vaio TT (and other ultraportables such as the Toshiba R500) has room for an optical drive, and there’s even a Blu-ray option. Yes, that seems rather pointless, but at least there’s an HDMI output for sending the Blu-ray signal to a larger display. Solid state hard drives are also available, including dual 128GB drives (making for a sizable 256GB of SSD storage).

The basic Vaio TT runs about $2,000, while the Blu-ray version is $2,700. A version with a single 128GB SSD drive will cost $2,750. The system is available for order starting today, and should ship to retail stores sometime later this fall.

Logitech VX Nano Notebook Mouse

vx-nano-2.jpg

The trackpad is one place where Apple’s infamous one-button obsession actually works: no finger gymnastics are required for a right-click — you just put two fingers on the touchpad and press the single, big button with your thumb: perfect for both righties and southpaws.

Because there is no such software trickery when running OS X on the Wind, I bought a mouse, the Logitech VX Nano; a tiny, laser-toting wireless specimen which, despite its size, manages to pack most of Logitech’s full-sized gimmicks inside.

First, let’s compare the VX Nano to it’s new, younger brother, the v550 travel mouse. Both feature the same tiny USB dongle which slots into a USB port and stays there, like a hermit crab finding a new shell. Here are the differences, and the reasons I bought the older model.

V550

Clip and Go dock. This little nubbin sticks onto the case of your notebook and the mouse hooks on for portability. “Docking” also switches off the mouse, which saves a task. The regular Nano comes with a little padded pouch instead (pictured above), which is actually nore useful when you put the computer into a sleeve.

The V550 has a couple more things not found on the VX: the first is ambidextrosity. Because the design lacks side buttons, the sinister members of our species will be equally at home with it. The second is “Document Quick-Flip”, a software feature which pops up a document selector when you hit the right button.

VX NanoPicture 1.png

The VX Nano is really just a smaller version of the desktop mice with a few buttons missing. The included Logitech software lets you assign the buttons to various functions, including keystrokes, so you can perform any function you like. The Mac has built-in support for multi-button mice, but it's worth installing the software just for the fancy scroll function.

vx-nano-3.jpg

The scroll wheel is weighted and spins freely (a hefty push will click it into a regular mode). This means you can scroll through long documents easily, and when you get to where you want to, you just put your finger on the wheel to stop it. It's also very useful with video software, allowing you to scrub through clips at high speed, stop, and then advance frame-by-frame.

The wheel also tilts: mine is assigned to click forward and back in browser windows. Two more buttons live on the left side, with another below the wheel. The left-side buttons would be better placed on the actual side under the thumb, but maybe I just have big hands.

vx-nano-4.jpg

Underneath is the laser-hole, four slippery PTFE feet (not found on the v550), and a power switch and light which, like a refrigerator light, only comes on when you're looking (I checked) and requires a long press to switch on and off. The laser, like those on other Logitech mice, tracks on almost anything, from glass to jeans.

You also see the button to release the bottom panel. This is actually fun to open, like the secret floor hatch in the original Millennium Falcon toy. Inside you'll find...

vx-nano-5.jpg

... the batteries (2x AAA, included) and the nubbin. The batteries, according to the Logitech software, will last me for another 164.7 days. Which brings us to the Nubbin, or the plug-and-forget Nano-receiver, as Logitech would have it. The nubbin is a tiny USB dongle which communicates with the mouse in the 2.4GHz range. It drops out a lot less than a Bluetooth mouse, and runs at full USB speed, which should make things more accurate. It certainly picks up the signal fast enough: there is zero delay between plugging in and being able to use the mouse.

The kit also comes with a desktop USB extender cable, although this doesn't contain a receiver -- it's just a fancy USB extender. Here's the Nubbin:

vx-nano-6.jpg

And because we often get complaints that you can't judge the size of things from photos, here it is again, with a piece of string for size comparison:

vx-nano-7.jpg

Just kidding. Here it is with a standard iPod USB cable:

vx-nano-9.jpg

It is indeed "plug and forget", unless you want to use the mouse with more than one computer.

The VX Nano is a great little mouse. If you don't need the portability, go with something a little bigger to avoid wrist strain. If you have a notebook with an awful trackpad, though, this will save both your tendons and your frustration. The Nubbin and the weighted scroll-wheel really make the mouse shine, and the two AAAs lend it enough weight to feel solid and accurate. Verdict: Success.

DIS-6931 9-Megapixel Mobile Device

9 Megapixel Camera Phones Coming

Forget about 8 megapixel camera phones - those will be outdated soon with the advent of 9 megapixel handsets thanks to Digital Imaging Systems and their DIS6931 9 megapixel camera module that was specially developed for mobile devices. Other features found on this module include extremely fast autofocus (less than 300 milliseconds), a fast click-to-capture time (less than 200 ms) and high-quality lenses. Will this be as good as a regular point-and-shoot? Only time will tell when it is released, but I wouldn't bet against it considering how technology has progressed by leaps and bounds to date. The first 9 megapixel camera phones are tipped to roll out sometime in Q1 2009, and I suspect LG or Samsung will be first off the blocks.

RapidConnect - which does exactly what it says on the tin - lets you answer calls immediately by flipping the headset open, and closing it again will curtail the battery drain.

To keep everything clear, the H15 employs a pair of microphones, located in the top and bottom of the device. An internal processor compares the two and isolates the sound of your voice from the background hum. And if those noise levels are fluctuating, when you cross a busy street for example, the volume automatically adjusts so you can still hear the other person. At least that way other people aren't the only ones getting the benefit of your headset tech.

The H780 is the cheaper option. It sports the same CrystalTalk sound enhancement. You don't get any special power saving abilities, but because it doesn't employ such a complex dual-microphone array it's actually still good for seven hours of talk time. With its brushed aluminium finish, it's also the looker of the two.

Each can also connect to multiple sources at the same time - handy if you want to answer VoIP calls on your computer at the same time as normal calls from your mobile.

Both headsets are due out in Q4, probably around October time. UK prices are yet to be confirmed, but you will be able to pick them in the US for $129 and $99 respectively.

BenQ announces E1050 camera Mysterious Shooter

BenQ announces monochromatic (on the outside) E1050
BenQ is enhancing its selection of pocketable shooters with another modestly-spec'ed offering, the E1050. It has your standard 3x optical zoom lens on the front and 3-inch LCD on the back, with a 10 megapixel CCD forming the meat in this 17.6mm thick sandwich (though BenQ points out that it is 16.8mm thin at its skinniest bit). It's stainless case is only available in a muted gray, surely to disappoint those who need color in their life. However, that nondescript hue plus the inclusion of shooting speeds all the way down to ISO 3200, twice that of the earlier (and thinner) T850, should make this a solid choice for spies and ninjas. Beyond potential espionage action there isn't much to get excited about here, especially at an undisclosed price and undisclosed availability -- but don't let that stop you from checking out a picture of its back-side after the break.

Averatec's 10.2-inch netbook

We knew it was coming, and now Averatec's officially unveiled the Buddy, another 10.2-inch, Atom N270-based netbook. It's not straying far from that template laid down by the Eee 1000 and Wind, but the more recent photos we've dug up seem to show that it's not a straight up Wind rebadge as previously implied -- which could be a good or bad thing, depending on Averatec's attention to detail and / or OEM partner. The laptop manages 1GB of RAM, a 160GB HDD, Windows XP Home and WiFi for a reasonable $450, and should be hitting retail shelves and online stores soon.
